| Fiery evening sky from Mt. Fuji. Unfortunately I didn't make it to the top of the Fuji-san - it was just too crowded. No, I'm not kidding. If I haven't seen it I wouldn't believe it - but a mountain can be crowded. When the way up was narrow one even had to stand in line before one could move further. It had started to hail so I felt really cold after a while. At 3.400 m height I saw the masses moving up to the top and realized that I didn't enjoy this anymore so I went down. The Fuji-san is open for tourists only in July and August. But it's a sacred mountain and a very popular destination in Japan. Since I hadn't expected so many people there I hadn't checked the calendar and happened to be there on a weekend. It's probably my most valuable sight-seeing tip for Japan: Don't try to climb the Fuji-san on weekends :-). |
